The Duties of the Worshipful Master

The Worshipful Master is the elected leader and presiding officer of a Masonic Lodge. His responsibilities are both ceremonial and practical, resting upon the foundations of tradition, symbolism, and governance. While the precise expression of these duties may vary among lodges within the Grand Jurisdiction, the By-Laws of St. James Lodge No. 80 clearly set forth the obligations he owes to his Lodge. Further duties, owed to the Grand Lodge, are described in greater detail within its regulations, while publications such as the Lodge Officers’ Guide provide additional instruction and guidance.

That beyond the ancient charges and regulations and the duties laid down by the Book of Constitutions and the Lodge Officers Guide the Master is responsible for the safe keeping of the lodge records, books and papers, and with the Wardens shall hold all the Lodge furniture, jewels and other property, in trust for the members. He shall sign all orders on the Treasurer and be ex-officio a member of all committees.
