The Jewel of the Lodge

In every Lodge, there exists a visible array of jewels—those worn by the officers and those suspended from the collars of our regalia. These jewels are rich in symbolism, reminding us of the tools of our Craft, the duties of our stations, and the principles by which we are guided. Yet beyond the silver, gold, and enamel, there lies another jewel—far more precious than any that could be purchased or worn. This, Brethren, is what we may rightly call the true Jewel of the Lodge.

The Officer’s Jewels

We are taught that the jewels of office serve to distinguish the roles and responsibilities within the Lodge. The Square reminds the Worshipful Master to rule with fairness; the Level counsels the Senior Warden to preserve equality; the Plumb directs the Junior Warden to uprightness in all things. These, along with the other jewels, set forth an ordered system of governance in the Lodge and symbolize the practical virtues that ought to govern us in our daily lives.

The Hidden Jewel

But if we look deeper, we recognize that no Lodge can shine by the metals alone. The true jewel is not suspended from a ribbon, nor is it locked away in a display case. The true jewel is the harmony, goodwill, and brotherly love that unites us as Masons. Without this, the fairest jewels tarnish and lose their brilliance. With it, even the humblest Lodge radiates beauty and strength.

A Living Jewel

Consider how harmony polishes this jewel:

  • When the Master rules with patience, the jewel sparkles.
  • When Wardens work in unity, the jewel gleams.
  • When every Brother speaks kindly, assists willingly, and forgives readily, the jewel shines with unmatched brilliance.

Thus, this jewel is not static—it is living. It reflects the character of the Lodge, the spirit of its members, and the light of Masonry itself.

Guarding the Jewel

It becomes our sacred duty to guard and preserve this jewel. Discord, neglect, or indifference can dim its radiance. But diligence, charity, and genuine affection among Brethren will keep it ever-bright. Each of us carries a polishing cloth in the form of our actions, words, and example. By using these faithfully, we ensure that the Jewel of the Lodge will never lose its lustre.

Closing Thought

Brethren, let us always remember: the Square, Level, and Plumb may designate officers, but the greatest jewel is the spirit of unity and love that we cultivate together. This jewel is not worn on the outside, but carried in the heart. And when it shines, it illuminates not only our Lodge, but the world beyond its doors.

Your Worshipful Master
