The Duties of the Tyler

Introduction:
A look into the important duties and symbolism of the Tyler, the vigilant guardian of the Masonic Lodge. Though stationed without, his role is essential to the order, security, and dignity of Masonic labour.

Guardian of the Lodge

The primary responsibility of the Tyler is to see that the Lodge is properly tiled. He ensures that only duly qualified Brethren are permitted to enter when the Lodge is at work, thus protecting its proceedings from interruption and preserving the secrets of the Craft. No visitor is admitted without proper examination or being duly vouched for, and every Brother must be properly clothed before entry.

Preparation and Order

In addition to guarding the door, the Tyler prepares the Lodge room for meetings. He arranges the furniture, regalia, and working tools, ensuring the Lodge is in readiness for its ceremonies. Following the close of labour, he restores the room to order, maintaining the dignity and appearance of the Lodge.

Symbolism of the Sword

The Tyler’s drawn sword is an emblem of vigilance and caution. It serves as a reminder that every Mason must guard the entrance to his own heart and mind, keeping watch over his thoughts, words, and actions. Just as the Tyler protects the Lodge from cowans and eavesdroppers, so should every Brother protect the Craft from indiscretion and reproach.

Custodian of Masonic Integrity

While the Tyler’s station is outside the door, his duty reflects one of Freemasonry’s highest principles — discretion united with fidelity. His presence assures that the Lodge may work in peace and harmony, undisturbed and secure. He is, in every sense, the silent sentinel of the Lodge.

In summary:

The Tyler’s duty is to guard the Lodge, preserve its secrecy, and maintain its readiness. His role, though often unseen, symbolizes the ever-watchful care each Mason must exercise over the Craft — and over himself.
